Direct Replacement Performance Hybrid Turbo for Land Rover Discovery Td5 and Defender Td5.

The Hybrid turbo is a great way of improving driveability and power. This replacement turbo is constructed with lighter weight, CNC billet compressor and exhaust turbine help to reduce “lag”, plus the unit is constructed with a stronger 360 degree thrust bearing allowing higher speeds and thus deal with higher boost pressures safely. The compressor housing is machined to accept a 2058 compressor instead of standard 2052, meaning greater flow capacity.

The main difference between the two types of turbo (apart from price) is the VGT technically has the ability to provide a wider spread of power when set up correctly, but as with any tuning modification, it does need everything to be working 100% to achieve the best results. You would need the ECU mapping to get the absolute best results from the turbo.

Both turbos have capacity to produce over 200bhp when in high volume configuration. The hybrid use a stronger bearing than standard to allow higher speeds and boost and uses redesigned billet compressor which is lighter than standard to aid spool up.

Both units are supplied with a boost control box to stop the ECU entering overboost limp mode.

The hybrid turbo is exchange and we require an old one back whereas the VGT is outright purchase.

Both can be installed in a matter of hours and we strongly advise a fresh oil and filter to be installed.

We do advise against a raised intake as these can be restrictive and you may find you need a hard intake pipe to stop collapse on induction.

There are many factors which can have a bearing on maximum performance such as air flow meter, fuel pump, regulator, injectors, timing etc etc…

 

Turbo design is always a compromise; engines need a small turbo for fast spool-up and improved throttle response (reduced turbo-lag) but the small compressor size does not allow enough flow for anything beyond mid-range revs. So, a larger turbo is required for increased flow in the mid-range and higher revs.

Power is improved throughout the rev range but particularly in mid-range and top end, however this is greatly depending on mapping.

The Hybrid turbo is supplied complete with all gaskets required to complete the installation and is a direct replacement for the original unit.

Also supplied is a turbo boost control unit to correct ECU overboost faults.

To get the best from the turbo it is beneficial to use a specific map but improvements in driveability will be seen with any map or even standard tuning.

This turbo has capacity to produce over 190bhp with correct set up.

We strongly recommend an uprated intercooler is installed prior to fitting an uprated turbo.

The following must be considered prior to installing an after-market Hybrid Turbo charger –

EXCHANGE SURCHARGE – The original unit needs to be in good working order so please make sure it is packed well when you ship it to us. If it is not in good working order or it has been damaged in transit, then it is unlikely to be accepted and the surcharge will be payable.

An uprated intercooler must be used along with – Fresh oil, filter, feed and drain connections. If the engine has been rebuilt or the turbo has previously failed, at least two complete engine flush processes must be undertaken. Oil pressure must be checked and verified as correct and the original cause of failure ascertained and rectified.

The aftermarket turbo charger must be installed by a professional mechanic.

Non-restrictive intake system – we advise against the use of a raised or nonstandard air intake.  Please note – any restriction to the air intake on performance turbos will invalidate warranty. This can include raised air intakes.

Correctly sized exhaust system – either restrictive or too little back pressure can cause problems with uprated turbos and can invalidate warranty.

If your product fails due to a manufacturing defect we will repair or replace it without charge, at our discretion. Only original, unaltered and unmodified materials and workmanship are covered by this policy.

This warranty does not cover damage caused by accident, improper care, negligence, normal wear and tear, or the natural breakdown of materials over extended time and use.

Damage not covered under warranty may be repaired for a reasonable rate and a fee will be charged for return shipping.
